Our professional team of sports-scientists bring you programs complete with boxing and strength workouts that replicate the training styles of elite athletes. Your workouts will be fast-paced and high tempo with dynamic, full body movements. Durations, reps, exercises and rounds change day to day, simply select your daily workout and get started!
Each workout has been categorised to represent one of the following boxing styles, and as every style has its own flavour, the workouts will also. Read on and learn more about each boxing style, how this is represented in the workouts and the examples of the best boxers in each category.
Swarmer:
The ‘Swarmer’ boxer applies constant pressure to their opponent. Their goal is to overwhelm the opponent and break them mentally and then physically as they have no opportunity to rest, recover and reassess. The opponent cannot implement their own strategy and tactics and are never comfortable as the rhythm and timing of the fight is forced on them. The ‘Swarmer’ requires a high work level, constant movement and limited rest. This is reflected in the high volume, low rest, workouts.
A great example of this type of fighter is Arturo ‘Thunder’ Gatti, who was a two weight world champion. Gatti is well known for his trilogy with Micky Ward, their first fight was Ring magazine fight of the year in 2002 and round 9 was voted one of the ‘Rounds of the Century’.
Pure Boxer:
The ‘Pure Boxer’ works in a tight, controlled manner and will keep the fight at long range and look to win on points over the full duration of the fight. They will frustrate and wear down their opponent with tight hand defence, good head movement and a solid jab that can be used as an offensive punch, to score points, or as defensive punch, that keeps their opponent off balance and out of range and unable to get into position to land their own punches. This type of workout will follow the traditional pattern of 3 minute rounds with 30 seconds rest.
An example of this type of fighter is Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, a multiple weight world champion that finished his career undefeated at 50:0. Mayweather would frustrate opponents with his defence, movement and jab.
Slugger:
The ‘Slugger’ is a strong, powerful puncher that will try to bully their opponent into making a mistake and then look to finish the fight with a single punch knockout. The ‘Slugger’ doesn't usually move around the ring too much. They don’t throw a high volume of punches or long combinations; however, the punches that are thrown are done so with 100% effort and are all designed to inflict damage. These workouts are of shorter durations, with lots of power movements and short sharp bursts of activity.
This type of boxer can be seen with Rocky ‘The Brockton Blockbuster’ Marciano.Rocky was the world heavyweight champion from 1952-1956 and retired undefeated at 49: 0. Of his 49 victories, 43 were by way of knockout.
Counter Puncher:
The ‘Counter Puncher’ is agile and has great balance and movement and is able to make their opponent miss with their punches by using footwork, head movement and upper body movement. As soon as the opponent has missed, the counter punch is thrown and landed. The constant missing of the target and punching air, tires out the opponent and also frustrates them into throwing more and harder punches, which just reinforces their frustration and tiredness. These workouts are based on speed, agility, & quickness and are fast paced and make you earn your rest.
Probably the greatest counter puncher of all time is Muhammad Ali. Ali was a three time world heavyweight champion and was known for his footwork, agility and speed - “float like a butterfly sting like a bee”.
Southpaw:
The ‘Southpaw’ fighter is frequently considered awkward due to the challenge they provide to orthodox fighters. A southpaw fighter has their right foot forward and jabs with their right hand, meaning the left hand is the power hand. There are a lot more orthodox fighters; therefore, they are used to fighting each other. It is less common to fight southpaws and therefore, have less experience of punches coming from the different side and at different angles. Some fighters will be dominant on one side; however, will switch to the other side just to try and confuse their opponent. These workouts are a mixture of different durations, intensities and rest periods to reflect the unpredictable nature of a southpaw.
A great example of a southpaw and a switch hitter (a fighter that can change their stance) is Marvellous Marvin Hagler. Haglewas the undisputed middleweight champion of the world from 1980-1987. He could switch stance effectively, had great defence, was a devastating puncher, supremely conditioned and had an iron chin. Probably the greatest middleweight of all time.
Boxer-Puncher:
The ‘Boxer Puncher’ is similar in style to the pure boxer;however, also has elements of the slugger i.e. knockout power. More technical than the slugger, but not as smooth or as efficient as the pure boxer, they will use good technique to set-up their opponent, so that they can land their power punches. These workouts are longer durations, with rounds under three minutes and will also have plenty of power elements to replicate the knockout punch power.
Thomas ‘Hitman’ Hearns was the first, five weight world champion and was known for his devastating punch power. His height and long reach enabled him to move up in weight and still maintain his power. Hearns wasn’t as slick as his fellow legend, Sugar Ray Leonard; however, still had great boxing technique which allowed him to set up opponents, so that he could land his power punches.
